Principles that work.

OK, so I'm assuming the obvious, that your here because you already deal in rare books or want to look into it, and for now, that you have at least a little knowledge of collectible books, if not, it may be helpful to review other posts first.

This article doesn't deal with identifying which books are rare, but rather how to expose yourself to large collections of books being offered cheaply, of which there are many gems and treasures buried among them.

The advice given here comes from more than 25 years of buying and selling books. I started out in the antiques/collectibles business buying and selling books to used book shops, then several other places and it became a staple of my picking era because books could be had for low money more often than not if they were being sold in big lots.

Big lots by the way, being what I was interested in as a re-seller. At least big lots to pick from, (don't forget, you don't always have to buy the entire contents) But not to worry, this post deals with buying single books and small lots as well.

Many years ago, a volcano erupted. Some vulcanologist waited until the last minute to get out. Ash, rocks, and fire were falling everywhere. One of the rocks hits Marian and kills her.

Flash memory manufacturer Corsair says it has solved the problem of non secured flash drives by forcing you to enter a unique PIN code to enter their USB thumb drive and access your data.  It's a great idea but will it really help?


This "Flash Padlock" USB thumb drive protects file records and data with a unique PIN that you enter on the built in touchpad on the actual USB flash drive shell. You then enter the device into your USB plug on your laptop or desktop and the device operates as extra external memory. Corsair said the device is much more resistant to brute force attacks or keystroke loggers.


You see keystroke loggers record any keystroke you make on your keyboard. In other words, when you type in your password on your keyboard to unlock a secured USB thumb drive, and if a hacker has gotten a program of theirs on your device it would record your password as you type them (all of them). Every so often these keyloger programs send these simple text files via a build in e-mail program to their own e-mail inbox. This is bad!


The new Corsair device would ask that you type in your password before you plug your storage device into your computer USB flash drive port (USB port).  So in essence the keylogger hacker programs would never have a chance to record your computers keystrokes and there would be no way for them to access your data.


"Featuring auto-lock hardware security, Flash Padlock is the best way to secure your data while on the go. It prevents any unauthorized access or "Brute Force" attacks to the data on the Flash Padlock. Users can program in a PIN, much like they do for an ATM machine, to lock/unlock their data. An easy to use keypad in conjunction with lock/unlock indicator lights makes the Flash Padlock easy to use. The Flash Padlock is fully plug-and-play, and requires no software or drivers to work properly."


The Flash Padlock will auto lock after 15 seconds if removed from the computer. This ensures your data stays locked-up, if you forget to lock the device this thing does it by itself (I love things that make sense). The Flash Padlock USB storage device will work with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows based computers.

The DOE and EPA use the energy star program to promote the sell of eco-friendly kitchen appliances. Most of us have seen the yellow stickers with the energy star logo, but do you know what those stickers mean? For an appliance to qualify for an Energy Star, it must utilize between 10% and 66% less energy and/or water, than other models. However, it can not compromise the quality of the appliance or dismiss added features. This is one of the best ways to know the most eco-friendly appliances, and which use the least amount of energy. However, here are some additional tips on things to look for in appliances:

Stoves & Ovens

Induction - A cast iron or stainless steel pot is placed above the induction coil of the stove. This excites the molecules in the pot, and produces heat. Note: the process does not work with glass pots, and aluminum lessens the efficiency. Induction cooking is not only more energy efficient, but faster too. The induction cooker only heats the pot directly over it. It does not heat the air, or stove surface around it. Induction cooking has an efficiency rate of 84%. Typical gas cookers are around 40%. This is one of my favorite eco-friendly kitchen appliances.

Hybrid Solar Ovens- Solar ovens reach temperatures of around 400 degrees. Total solar ovens do not require any electrical energy. They solely rely on the suns solar energy. A Hybrid version works on the same principle, but has an electric backup, for when solar use in not available.

Fridge and Freezer

Side by side refrigerators use about 10% more energy than a top and bottom option. Avoid ice makers, as they use electricity to produce ice. Also, avoid automatic defrosters and heaters. A refrigerator accounts for about 15% of your total electric bill. So, if you can not buy all of your eco-friendly kitchen appliances at one time, get this one first. Read the yellow and black "energy guide label." It will tell you how much energy each brand and model uses.

Dishwasher

Dishwashers use about a sixth of the water and soap, and about half of the energy, that washing by hand does. Look for a dishwasher that has a booster heater & on/off for electric dryer feature. You may think that the smaller motor will lessen the energy usage, but going with a larger motor will keep the dishwasher from running a second cycle. Smaller motors do no have the spray power to clean heavy soiled dishes. Also, look for water efficient models. Some of these use half the water of a regular dishwasher and have auto sensors, that determine how dirty dishes are.


Keep in mind- the price of eco-friendly kitchen appliances may be higher, but it will not take long to recoup the additional cost of the appliance. So, take advantage of the information, and compare several brands and models. Also, ask about federal tax credits for upgrading to energy star appliances.

You have a digital camera and enjoy taking photos where ever you go. You put your photos on the computer at appropriate moments like after a holiday or event. But what can you do with these photos?

You can:
1. Leave them alone and do nothing apart from look at them from time to time.

2. Edit and enhance them using programs like Picasa, Picture It, Photoshop, Kodak or any other suitable program you may have. Doing this enables you to remove red eye, crop out unwanted areas, brighten up a dark section or entire photo and more. You can even add text and backgrounds to make them specific to various aspects of life eg wedding, birthday, beach etc.

3. Create slide shows or folders on the computer specific to what you want. If you have an external hard drive then you can transfer and sort out photos into topics, on it because photos take up space on your computer and can slow it down.

4 Back up your photos by burning them on CDs and DVDs every seven years to keep uo with the advancement in computer technology.

5. Print your photos out either using your own printer or make use of the specials at the shops and print them out using ther printing equipment.If you do this you can possibly do it straight from your camera, or from a memory stick or CD / DVD once the data is put on them.

6. Create photo album with your hard copies. You could be extra creative and try scrapbooking.

7. Create a photo book of something special like a holiday, wedding. new baby. This is great to give away for a gift or keep yourself ( or both!! )
There are special programs you use for this eg photostyler. So you need the required software to download. I got mine from the local chemist but you can download them from sites on the computer. Basically you create the 20 or more pages ( your choice ) one page at a time using a kind of powerpoint application where you can add backgrounds, text, change positions of the photos and more. You save it and the organise the production of the hard copy by burning it onto a CD to take down to your local chemist for processing. The book will come back to them then for you to pick up.

These programs enable you to also use your photos to create personalised mugs, calenders,posters, stationary. What a great idea for gifts.

8. Create a mind movie around the idea of the law of attraction, which requires a power point kind of software to do. A mind movie consists of a movie of photos set to words and music. If you are keen to find out more go to mindmovies.com

9. Put your photos on various places like Facebook, blogs, websites, flickr to show others.

10. Sell things either second hand or new on online auction sites like ebay and TradeMe.

11. You can earn a little extra money by creating your own online stores on sites like on cafepress ( look up cafepress.com ) and zazzle ( look up zazzle.com ). The items you will be selling range from apparal to mugs to stationary to other gift ideas. The idea is that you put your own photos ( or art works ) on these items and then keep the difference between the wholesale price and retail price. Actually the proceedure is all done online. So you just have to uplad your photos onto your selected item and your product is then created. You get given a link which you can put on any website, blog etc for the advertising of your shop to get traffic. When people want to buy your item they will do it directly through cafepress or zazzle and your set up account will be credited. Just look up the respective sites for more information.

So as you can see there are eleven exciting things you can do with your digital camera photos once you have enjoyed taking the everlasting shots. In fact you could do these things with your film camera photos if you scan the photos onto your computer with the exception of point 6 and 1.

If you want some over-the-top laughs, see Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder", a very confused film that can't make up its mind whether it wants to be an action adventure, war story, comedy, satire, mockumentary or wannabe drama. If you want fantasy disguised as action adventure, see "300", a film with more animation than acting.

Tropic Thunder - 2 Stars (Average)

If you want some over-the-top laughs, see Ben Stiller's "Tropic Thunder", a very confused film that can't make up its mind whether it wants to be an action adventure, war story, comedy, satire, mockumentary or wannabe drama. In fact, it was a little of each and good at none, all of which makes it sometimes funny but an average film.

That would be because Stiller collaborated on the screenplay, directed the film, starred in it as Tugg Speedman, and was the driving force that made it happen.

In essence, one might say Tropic Thunder was all about Stiller with the help of some other headliners named Robert Downey Jr. (Kirk Lazarus-think rising from the dead), Jack Black (Jeff Portnoy-think Portnoy's Complaint), Tom Cruise (Les Grossman-not less, but more gross and vulger), and Matthew McConaughey (Rick Peck-think theatrical agent).

There were also lesser lights, including Brandon T. Jackson (Alpa Chino-think Al Pacino), Nick Nolte (Four Leaf Tayback-think way back, on the downslide), Bill Hader (Studio Executive Rob Slolom-fresh from Saturday Night Live) and a host of family, friends and buddies who got jobs in the film.

In 22 words, Tropic Thunder is about making a war film in Vietnam after the fact and the stars encounter an illegal drug production operation. Its rated R on purpose to accommodate the pervasive sexual references to body parts, violent content and drug material.

The funniest part in the film for me was listening to Les Grossman (Tom Cruise) unload a profanity-laced tirade on a kidnapper demanding a ransom for Tugg Speedman.

It would be difficult for me to say with a straight face that I am a Ben Stiller fan. Stiller always seems to me to have a vacant look about him, like you know there is a person inside that body but it is never evident from his countenance. Far too much of his humor centers on the gross, filthy and sexual, like he has a lot of fantasies he is never going to enjoy after the filming is over.

The real star of this film is not Stiller, but Robert Downey Jr. who was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor. Downey also picked up the same nomination from the Golden Globes, and Tom Cruise did as well in the same category. Neither won an Oscar or a Golden Globe.

300 - 2 Stars (Average)

"300" really suffered from having Zack Snyder both help write and then direct a remake of the historic Battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC when 300 Spartans from Greece took on a Persian army 100,000+ led by King Xerxes. Some historians point to this event as the birthplace of freedom and democracy.

The best way to describe the merit of this film is to let you know that 300 won the Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film, and Snyder won as Best Director, at the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Awards. You read that correctly. There were zero nominations for Golden Globe or Academy Awards. Certainly, 300 has some great battle scenes in a fantasy world.

It has very little place in the real world of filmmaking by filmgoers watching in the real world. Why? I thought you would never ask. Here's why:

The film was shot in 60 days while post-production (also known as hocus-pocus) took almost a year as there were 1,523 cuts in the film, and more than 1,300 visual effect shots involving 8,631 visual effect elements. This may or may not be some kind of a record worthy of the sorcery of Harry Potter.

The film was photographed almost entirely on a sound-stage in Montreal. This is carrying post-production to the extreme. The R rating (done on purpose) included the usual sexuality and nudity (with which the vast majority of films are made today), and enough bloody violence to choke a horse eating grain at a trough (585 visual killings by stabbing, goring, bludgeoning, slicing and cutting off body parts of soldiers and animals).

Spartan King Leonidas (Gerald Butler) manages to personally hack and whack 33 Persian soldiers, 1 Persian messenger and a wolf. I am told his number does not include Persians that he shielded off during battle sequences, as if that is important.

Trust me when I say the 300 Spartans did a great job of killing animated characters.

I am sure that Zack Snyder was really pleased with his film and awards (think Sinatra and I did it my way); I was not as pleased. 300 reminds me of why I dislike so many action adventure films-not much real action, not much real adventure, too much real animation.

Most people are not aware that there are two different types of fragrances, and by fragrance type I'm referring to the actual construction of the fragrance as opposed to fragrance families (which deals more with the ingredients of a particular fragrance) or with concentrations such as eau de parfum and eau de toilette. While having an understanding of fragrance types is by no means a prerequisite for their enjoyment, it does help to know how fragrance types react when applied to the skin and how this affects the fragrances you choose.

Traditionally, fragrances have been developed using a three stage formulation and you will often see references to fragrance 'notes' which can be explained as follows:

Top Notes

This is essentially what gives off the first impression of a fragrance and is usually comprised of lighter, more volatile ingredients which can give a fragrance a sense of freshness. Typical top notes include citrus (lemon, grapefruit, bergamot), green notes (pine, mint, galbanum) and aldehyde.

Middle Notes

After several minutes, the top notes begin to blend with middle notes or what is often referred to as the 'heart' of a fragrance. The dominant notes of the heart are what defines a fragrance and are used to classify it into one of the fragrance families such as floral, woody or oriental. As the fragrance family names suggest there are a vast number of ingredients which can be combined to create unique scents.

Base Notes

As the name suggests, these notes make up the underlying tones of a fragrance and what give it lasting appeal. Base notes are made up of the least volatile ingredients and popular ingredients include amber, vanilla and rare woods.

Although traditional fragrances have these separate notes, the transition from top to base should be almost imperceptible and the end result should be a harmonious blend of ingredients. In recent years however, a second fragrance type has emerged where there is no discernible transition from top to base. These fragrances are said to have a vertical formulation and tend to have a single dominating note as they settle.

So why is it useful to know how a particular fragrance formulation reacts when worn? Well it's really useful when testing perfumes. Think about the last time you tried a new perfume in store. Chances are you sprayed a little of the perfume on a blotter card or on your skin and had a quick sniff. While this may have given you an initial impression of the fragrance, it certainly wouldn't have given you a true sense of what the fragrance is like. For vertical fragrances this is less of an issue but for traditional fragrances that need time to develop, a quick sniff is usually not enough to decide whether or not a particular fragrance is for you. By understanding that fragrances need time you are less likely to judge a fragrance on first impressions. I test perfumes all the time and I can't count the number of times I've been initially disappointed by a particular perfume, only to come to love it as it has settled through the day. So keep this in mind next time you're looking for that signature scent and remember, fragrances, like most good things in life need time to fully appreciate them.

Electronics Insurance - Are Your Electronics and Computers Covered by Your Insurance?

There is a lot of misinformation today about consumer electronics and how it is treated by insurance companies. Most people I talk to think that if they have homeowners or renters insurance, their consumer electronics are covered.

But they usually find out that their assumptions aren't true...at claims time.

Sure, some of the property is covered. But there are a bunch of limits and exclusions that will surprise you if you have a loss and file a claim.

Don't wait until claim time to learn about this important coverage. Read this article carefully and make good decisions about your coverage.

Twenty years ago, consumer computer usage and ownership was not all that common. If you owned a cell phone, you carried it in a bag the size of a small purse. There were few home fax machines. Answering machines were pretty common, but voicemail was still on the horizon. Scanners were non-existent. Printers and copiers were huge and expensive, and you didn't see them in most homes. If you were the rare person who had satellite TV, the dish was about eight feet across and sat out in the back yard. And Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and MP3 players had not been invented yet.

But today....

In our home we have:
o    two desktop computers with monitors
o    four laptop computers
o    four printers
o    one stand-alone fax machine
o    one combination fax, scanner, copier
o    three TVs
o    two VCRs
o    one digital video camera with tripod for our home recording studio
o    one audio mixing board, one microphone, one amplifier, two external soundcards, and a 500GB hard drive, all for our home recording studio
o    two DVD players
o    two cell phones, one smartphone, each with voicemail
o    one satellite TV system with a 24" dish on the roof
o    two Ipods

Your home may not have that amount of electronics, but then again, you might have more. The way that consumer electronics prices have tumbled over the years makes ownership much easier for more and more people.

But...is it covered? Does your homeowners or renters insurance cover your electronics?

We run three separate businesses out of our home. Most of our electronics are used in our businesses.

Do you have a home business? There are millions of home businesses...everything from home daycare to a service business to multilevel marketing businesses. Many times, those entrepreneurs own office electronics for their home business. Do you use your computers and other electronics for any kind of home business? Even if you're answering office email on your home computer, it could be considered "business use."

Are they covered by YOUR homeowners policy?

Are they covered if they are business-related?

What happens if your desktop or laptop computer is stolen, either from home or away from home? Is the theft covered by your homeowners insurance policy?

If you're carrying your laptop through an airport anywhere in America, your laptop is at huge risk for theft. (See more below) What if your laptop is stolen while you're in the airport?

Here is the answer to those questions...

MAYBE!!

In the Homeowners or Renters Policy, Coverage C, Contents, there are special limits of $2,500 for "property, on the residence premises, used primarily for business purposes." The policy says there is a $500 limit for "property away from the residence premises used primarily for business purposes." Of course, you will have a deductible to pay first, so if your deductible is $500 or more, you won't get ANY money from the insurance company for this loss.

Are your personal electronics covered? Yes, but only for the following perils:

o    Fire or lightning
o    Windstorm or Hail
o    Explosion
o    Riot or Civil Commotion
o    Aircraft (not in aircraft, but if aircraft fall on your stuff.)
o    Vehicles (not in vehicles, but if vehicles crash into your stuff.)
o    Smoke
o    Vandalism or Malicious Mischief
o    Theft
o    Falling Objects (stuff falling onto your stuff)
o    Weight of Ice, Snow or Sleet
o    Accidental Discharge or Overflow of Water or Steam
o    Sudden and Accidental Tearing Apart or Bursting (of a steam or hot water system).
o    Freezing
o    Sudden and Accidental Damage from an Artificially Generated Electrical Current
o    Volcanic Eruption

As I said above, the policy limit for business electronics at the residence is $2,500.

If your laptop or other portable electronics are stolen from your car, there is no coverage under your Auto insurance for the theft.

Also remember, that under Coverage C, Contents, payment is made on an Actual Cash Value basis, not Replacement Cost Value. The only way to get RCV is to add the Contents Replacement Cost endorsement to your policy. It's not automatic, you have to request it.

How about other kinds of damage that your computer might sustain?

o    Accidental damage, such as dropped equipment, falls, liquid spills and auto collisions.
o    Water damage

Those kinds of damages are not covered under your homeowners or renters policy.

And what about the software and sensitive data in your computer? Is that covered, too?

Not likely. In the Homeowners and Renters policies, under the "Property Not Covered" section, "business data, including data stored in computers and related equipment" is not covered.

So, to be fully covered, you'll need to buy some additional coverage.

COMPUTER AND PERSONAL ELECTRONICS INSURANCE

o    Manufacturer warranties do not protect your computer from accidental damage or theft
o    Even though some manufacturers do offer special "damage only" coverage, they do not offer coverage for theft, power surges, natural disasters or vandalism.

You already know how easy it is to have electronics with replacement value in excess of $2,500. There are loaded desktops and laptops that easily exceed $2,500 EACH.

So, you have some choices:

1.    Call your agent and buy a Personal Property Endorsement to add coverage to your homeowners or renters policy. Downsides to this choice are (a) many endorsements only pay the Actual Cash Value of the damaged property, not replacement cost, and (b) perils like Accidental Damage, Drops, Falls, Cracked Screens, Liquid Spills and Auto Collisions are not covered.

2.    Buy a custom policy that just adds special coverage for your computers and other electronics, like:

o    Desktops
o    Laptops and notebooks
o    Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs)
o    Smartphones
o    Digital cameras
o    MP3 players
o    Scanners/Faxes/Copiers
o    Printers
o    DVD players
o    Flash drives
o    Servers
o    External hard drives
o    Digital camcorders
o    Peripherals that connect to your computers through an USB port, Firewire, PCMCIA or another input

Business Electronics

In May 2006, burglars stole a laptop from the home of a data analyst at the Department of Veterans Affairs. The laptop contained the sensitive personal information of over 26 million veterans and military personnel. The FBI said that the laptop was recovered after an informant "snitched," motivated by a $50,000 reward.

But it's not just organizations that deal with consumer data that are concerned about thefts. Companies whose employees have laptops are naturally concerned with the value of the computer when it is the company that owns the laptop.

The Ponemon Institute, a privacy risk management think tank, released an extensive study in June 2008 entitled "Airport Insecurity : The Case of Missing and Lost Laptops." They studied laptop security at 106 American airports and found that there is an average of 12,000 laptops lost, missing or stolen at American airports PER WEEK! The airport with the worst record is Los Angeles International, with about 1,200 per week. The nation's busiest airport, Atlanta's Hartsfield, was in eighth place with 450 per week.

Further, the study found that only 33% of the laptops within the airport's Lost and Found Departments are ever reclaimed! That means that the remaining 67% of unclaimed laptops are either sold or disposed of by airport authorities. Can you imagine the amount of sensitive personal and business data contained in those laptops? No one knows what happens to that data, but it is ALL at risk. The Identity Theft risks are astronomical.

Education Coverage

Students face a higher risk of damage or theft than a normal adult user. Students can experience accidents when they're putting their stuff into their locker, or accidentally get bumped in a busy hallway, or when they're running to the bus. A soft drink could be spilled on the keyboard, or they could sit their laptop bag down somewhere and later find it missing.

This policy protects students' computers against Accidental Damage, Theft, Vandalism, Power Surge, and Natural Disasters at any location within the USA, Canada and while in transit.

Small Business Coverage is for any sized business with electronics property values up to $49,999, covering Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Vandalism, Power Surge and Natural Disasters.

Commercial Coverage is a group plan for organizations that have electronics property values in excess of $50,000. Coverage can be one of the following: Comprehensive (Accidental Damage, Theft, Fire, Vandalism, Power Surge, and Natural Disasters); Theft ONLY, or Accidental Damage ONLY.

The Commercial policy can benefit organizations such as:

o    Schools and colleges that want to make their student's notebook computers more safe and less at risk.
o    Corporations issuing notebooks and laptops to their workers, and wishing to minimize their risk of capital loss.

In these organizations, the equipment is owned by the corporation or school and used by the employee or student. Experience has shown that if an individual does not own the computer, he or she is likely to take less care of the item than if they owned it themselves. Schools and businesses need to insure their equipment against the perils that could turn their expensive equipment into unusable junk.
